A FIT MINUTE. KARISSA SPARKE.

Blogger, blonde beauty and self proclaimed ocean child, Karissa Sparke  (@karissasparke), wraps up her simple and holistic approach to health and fitness.

FITNESS TO YOU SUMMED UP...
Fitness is all about feeling good. For me, its all about active living and having the energy to do everything you want to do.

WHAT'S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE…
Hmm I don’t really have any food-related guilty pleasures. If you call delicious raw vegan chocolate or cakey delights guilty, I suppose that would count.. I must admit actually, America made guilty vegan-friendly pleasures all too easy. Wholefoods had these incredible vegan donuts that my fiancé and I ate copious amounts of in our travels- things that I would never really eat or crave back here in Aus.

WHAT DOES YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE LOOK LIKE…
I actually don’t have a strict routine at all. Its all about active living, and most of my fiancés & my favourite things to do are outdoors. We surf, standup paddle board, or even make the most of a quick beach study break by playing Frisbee or doing AcroYoga. I run whenever I can and love making use of the outdoor exercise stations we have on our coastal run. I also practice yoga for strengthening and the peacefulness I experience afterwards. Hiking/Nature walks, waterskiing, snowboarding are all some of my other favourite things to do.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GET FIT/HIT THE GYM WHEN YOU'RE HAVING 'ONE OF THOSE DAYS'…
I always just remind myself – you never ever regret doing something active. Those endorphins fill your body with positive energy, you sleep better, and you just feel better all round.

FAVOURITE FOOD/ RECIPE?…
I’m such a salad bowl/Buddha bowl kind of girl – they are just so freaking delicious and versatile. Go for a theme- i.e. Japanese, Mediterranean, Mexican and work with that. Never-ending deliciousness right there.

WHAT DOES YOUR WORK-OUT WARDROBE LOOK LIKE?...
Depends what activity I’m doing, but I’m a massive sports crop lover – pairing them with looser shorts for running, or tights (of varying lengths) for yoga practice. In summer I invested in quite a few sporty bikinis so I could run to the beach and go for a swim and run home.

YOUR SECRET TO MAINTAINING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE?...
Really for me, it is all about the food I am putting into my body. I’ve never really understood the idea of cheat days – because I feel like the idea of rewarding yourself for taking care of yourself with something unhealthy seems counter intuitive. If you’re still putting that food on a pedestal, then you are making it difficult to change your habits into something long term. I always ‘treat myself’ with more expensive healthy food I don’t always buy – e.g. “hell yes, I am going to buy that $7 punnet of blueberries”. I personally choose to follow a plant-based diet, and I find this makes it so easy to know what I am putting in my body is healthy and nutritious. People are actually surprised to know I don’t exercise a ridiculous amount and that I actually eat SOOOOO MUCH. I choose to follow a lifestyle that is focused on abundance and eating until I am satiated, rather than being restrictive or calorie counting in any form.

POST WORK-OUT YOU'LL FIND ME...
Either juicing or smoothie-ing. Or munching on fruit in some form. Something really hydrating to replenish my body.

MY SIGNATURE MEAL IS...
See above – Buddha bowls or any Asian-inspired food – curries, sushi, rice paper rolls.

ANY ADVICE/ MOTIVATION FOR PEOPLE TRYING TO KICK-START A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE…
I’m not an expert of any kind, but I guess just find things that you love doing, that make exercise not feel like exercise. Second to that, educate yourself and make sure the changes you are making are sustainable and are focused on long-term achievements. Focus on abundance and eating the right foods. I believe any diet that focuses on calorie restriction isn’t sustainable. Also WATCH DOCUMENTARIES! They are so inspiring and can help you find/fuel your passion.
